It likely means sinking every single penny you can scrape together and living in what would politely be called poverty for years until the business is successful enough to actually pay you a wage. I started at 24 and I paid myself minimum wage till I was about 40. My husband was a bit more successful he started his business at 35 when he got his doctorate and by the time he was 47 he could increase his wage above minimum wage. I have been in business now for roughly 48–49 years, I now make a nice income and the business is doing very well but it takes time, hard work, patience, and the ability to defer gratification. You have to literally be willing to live on almost nothing for a lot longer than you think.

"I went back to school, and nobody knew. Because had anybody known at that time, I wouldn't have been able to be head of the student council, I wouldn't have been chosen as one of the two teenagers in the state of Tennessee to go to the White House conference on youth. None of those things would have happened, and the entire trajectory of my life would have been different.”

I started my 4th business 3 years ago (at 57) and I'm really enjoying it. Yeah, when I started my first business at age 26, it was a lot easier to work long hours but my productivity was lower. I made mistakes at a lot higher rate than I do now. More rework and do-overs. More agonizing over the right path or just plunging ahead without a clear view of the big picture. Plus the occasional really dumb idea pursued with vigor.
Of course, now I sometimes forget why I went to the tool chest and which tool I wanted!

Those with ambition and drive to start a business but lacking a pile of money should not become discouraged. Startup capital can be raised in a variety of ways. Small Business Administration-backed bank loans are a good place for new business owners to start. Not all entrepreneurs will be approved, however. Those unable to raise sufficient funds should be wary of taking on debt and instead might consider alternative financing.

What field/industry are you looking to enter? Overall is it a successful and growing industry or is it a declining industry? is the market a monopoly, oligopoly etc.? Think about these things and focus on competition, now I don't mean rivals I mean the businesses surrounding you… what are they doing right? what are they doing wrong?

I didn't have any cash when I started so the first few years was quite a struggle. That was 24 years ago. It's pretty easy going now. We do several million in sales, provide good jobs for a dozen people and produce a great product. It has been very satisfying but of course a lot of work as well.

Starting a business can be scary. People often look for excuses. Am I too old. Am I too young. Maybe I should save more money first. Do I have the knowledge. You can always find excuses not to do something. I have walked this planet for a while. I have had some successes and some failures. You know the funny thing. When I look back on my life I can't find a single thing that I tried and failed at that I regret. I do find lots of things I do regret. They are the things I wanted to do but didn't. Not at all. In 2017 I was 55 and started my own Amazon store - Sells Books and More - where I sell books, movies and video games. It was slow at first because I only sold books, but as I learned more, I expanded my product lines. I’m 57 now (58 later this year) and last year my sales were over 40,000 part-time. One of the good things about starting a business later in life, is that if you have a regular full-time job, you will probably be retiring from that in the near future. My goal is to do just that in another 6 years, then I can focus on my own business full-time (if I want to).
