Is over 50 too old to be an entrepreneur?

Nope, but you would need to realize it takes a fair amount of hard work and long hours. It likely means sinking every single penny you can scrape together and living in what would politely be called poverty for years until the business is successful enough to actually pay you a wage. I started at 24 and I paid myself minimum wage till I was about 40. My husband was a bit more successful he started his business at 35 when he got his doctorate and by the time he was 47 he could increase his wage above minimum wage. I have been in business now for roughly 48–49 years, I now make a nice income and the business is doing very well but it takes time, hard work, patience, and the ability to defer gratification. You have to literally be willing to live on almost nothing for a lot longer than you think.
Oprah - at 62 years old - jumped from the 5th to 2nd richest self- made women in Forbes’ 2016 US Rich List -- by turning her problem into her profit.
Throughout Oprah’s rise to fame, she has had a lifetime battle, played out publicly.
"I was raped at 9 years old by a cousin, then again by another family member, and another family member," Oprah has said. As a result of the abuse, she was pregnant with a baby son at 14, who she lost.
"I went back to school, and nobody knew. Because had anybody known at that time, I wouldn't have been able to be head of the student council, I wouldn't have been chosen as one of the two teenagers in the state of Tennessee to go to the White House conference on youth. None of those things would have happened, and the entire trajectory of my life would have been different.”
"So I'd end up with these cruel self-absorbed guys who'd tell me how selfish I was, and I'd say 'Oh thank you, you're so right' and be grateful to them. Because I had no sense that I deserved anything else. Which is also why I gained so much weight later on. It was the perfect way of cushioning myself against the world's disapproval.”
She has grown her TV career while increasing in size. In 1988 she lost 67 pounds to get into a pair os size 10 Calvin Klein jeans, saying “I had literally starved myself for four months - not a morsel of food.” Just two days later, she began putting the pounds back on and could no longer fit in the jeans.
By 1992 she was up to 237 pounds and has bounced 60 pounds up and down in the twenty years since.
Then, 7 months ago, Oprah decided to put her money where her mouth was, and invested $43 million for a 10% stake in Weight Watchers, to be a part-owner, board member, and spokesperson.
In January she tweeted “Eat bread, Lose weight. Whaaattt?" with a video of her losing 26 pounds since she began Weight Watcher's program 3 months earlier. As a result, Weight Watchers’ stock price jumped from $11.35 to $15.62 and Oprah made a $12.5 million gain in a day.
Her “Oprah Effect” has brought over 1 billion new impressions to the company, and the company has doubled in value, to $1 billion, since she invested.
That means, in the 27 weeks since she invested, she has lost one pound in weight, and she has gained $2 million in profit, week after week.
"My own struggles with the scale are well known. I’ve never believed in hiding them. Gone, for me, are the days of wanting to be thin to fit into anything other than my best body and best life. What I do believe in strength in numbers.”
And how can you make sure they’re with you for the purpose, not just the profit?
“Lots of people want to ride with you in the limo, but what you want is someone who will take the bus with you when the limo breaks down.” ~ Oprah Winfrey
I started my 4th business 3 years ago (at 57) and I'm really enjoying it. Yeah, when I started my first business at age 26, it was a lot easier to work long hours but my productivity was lower. I made mistakes at a lot higher rate than I do now. More rework and do-overs. More agonizing over the right path or just plunging ahead without a clear view of the big picture. Plus the occasional really dumb idea pursued with vigor.
Of course, now I sometimes forget why I went to the tool chest and which tool I wanted!
You have already decided what you want to do. And more importantly, what you DON'T want to do.
You know how to handle people much better. You've met more people, had more relationships, seen more stupid Human tricks, etc.
You know more about the value of money. And time.
The plans you develop are more fact-based and experience-based and far less emotionally-based.
Your dreams of success are tempered by your failures. You don't put a bunch of time into something that "feels right" without doing the research. You know better than to answer a question that nobody ever asked!
Did I mention that your experience is a great filter for stupid ideas?
You become more efficient overall. It hurts a bit to bend over and pick up that box. So you build a shelf so you don't have to! This pays off in more ways than just a chiropractor bill.
Your energy is more directed and focused.
No, over 50 is not too old. If it is, then I'm screwed.
For most people, retirement conjures up an image of an elderly couple sitting in their Florida home reading the newspaper.
Retirement usually means no more 8-hour work days and no more income, which is why there's so much discussion around which investments you should consider for your retirement account and stress about how to hold on to those savings.
But it turns out a lot of people are challenging the traditional definition of retirement.
Those aged 55-64 in the US have actually had the highest rate of entrepreneurial activity in the last 10 years.
That's not to say that this is a new phenomenon. The founders of McDonald's, Coca Cola, and Kentucky Fried Chicken were all over 50 when they established their businesses.
Janeel says. "It’s been so much fun to get up every day and go to work because we determine what’s important: our clients.”
These over-50 entrepreneurs turned their passions into second careers and couldn’t be happier. For those dreaming of turning a hobby into a living, or longing to be their own boss after years of working for others, a second career as an entrepreneur be a viable solution.
Those with ambition and drive to start a business but lacking a pile of money should not become discouraged. Startup capital can be raised in a variety of ways. Small Business Administration-backed bank loans are a good place for new business owners to start. Not all entrepreneurs will be approved, however. Those unable to raise sufficient funds should be wary of taking on debt and instead might consider alternative financing.
All the best and God bless
No way.
Probably better. The truth is that age is just a number.
Either that burning drive is there or not. And either fire will go out or it will burn bright inside and you will have to go for it. Seems like you’ll have a choice…
Be healthy though. It will help through the tougher times.
Nothing to stop a business plan being written in the evenings.
Absolutely not! So yea, you get that cliche saying over and over again but its true: age is JUST a NUMBER. As a 50 year old there are still sooooo many opportunities for you to seize.
What field/industry are you looking to enter? Overall is it a successful and growing industry or is it a declining industry? is the market a monopoly, oligopoly etc.? Think about these things and focus on competition, now I don't mean rivals I mean the businesses surrounding you… what are they doing right? what are they doing wrong?
If you've watched Dead Poet’s Society then you will understand CARPE DIEM. If you haven't, either go watch the movie now or ruin the fun and look it up. Hope this helps! IT. IS. NOT. LATE. CARPE DIEM!!!!
No, it isn’t.
Colonel Sanders, the father of KFC, created KFC when he was 65.
Takichiro Mori made his billions after he turned 55 when he left the world of academia to become a real estate investor.
Tim and Nina Zagat, creators of the Zagat restaurant reviews, published their first collection of restaurant reviews at the age of 51, after a life in the field of law.
So no, 50 isn’t too late to start a business. Heck, even 60 isn’t too late. Not even 70. It’s never too late to start a business as long as you have the drive and motivation to pursue it.
Takichiro Mori
First off Colonel Harlan Sanders started KFC with his first social security check at age 65. James Cash Penney also started his business at 65. I didn't wait so long. I started my business at age 50. I didn't have any cash when I started so the first few years was quite a struggle. That was 24 years ago. It's pretty easy going now. We do several million in sales, provide good jobs for a dozen people and produce a great product. It has been very satisfying but of course a lot of work as well.
50 is a pretty good age to start a business. You have had some time to develop some experience. You have a little more maturity than you had a few decades ago. You have enough time left to enjoy your accomplishments.
Entrepreneurship isn't lixed with age.
Its about the idea . In fact, 50 is the perfect age to start a business as entrepreneurship is based on knowledge and experience. Many people claim that a 50-year-old has a better chance of success as an entrepreneur than a 25-year-old.
However, there are many factors that you need to consider. Starting a business requires a lot of money, not just at the start, but throughout your journey. There is no assurance that you will get profits and you need to be financially stable to encounter any losses.
People in their 50’s are more experienced and have seen more of the world. Studies show that 50-year-olds have shown less difficulty in starting businesses than 25-year-olds.
However, you need to ensure that you are up to date with modern business and marketing strategies. Younger people are more connected to the modern world, especially when it comes to social media. To conclude, yes, 50 is not too old to start a business.
No. Get started ,make sue your vision is clear , work hard, learn all the time, become a better person

Not at all. In 2017 I was 55 and started my own Amazon store - Sells Books and More - where I sell books, movies and video games. It was slow at first because I only sold books, but as I learned more, I expanded my product lines. I’m 57 now (58 later this year) and last year my sales were over 40,000 part-time. One of the good things about starting a business later in life, is that if you have a regular full-time job, you will probably be retiring from that in the near future. My goal is to do just that in another 6 years, then I can focus on my own business full-time (if I want to).
