The mayday call that came from the plane, which is issued when a flight is in grave and imminent danger and needs immediate assistance, was downgraded to a PAN-PAN -- possible assistance needed -- before the flight landed, the Associated Press reported.

I like these stories, makes me more relaxed when flying knowing that mega-huge metal tube I'm in, flying miles above ground, can still function on one engine.
It's even more impressive that they can have an engine fail just as the plane is taking off, and can still climb out on one engine.
Completely agree. I've flown many trans-Atlantic and trans-Pacific flights. But so many planes flying those routes each day, and planes are not dropping from the sky on a regular basis. I don't think about it, and if something tragic did happen it would be quick so why worry. But, if they ever go to all electric planes, then what happens with a power surge or outage?
I don't know why they state 'Managed to land safely' when part of the certification process requires that the plane be able to fly on a single engine. The plane simply performed as designed.

There was a blonde sitting next to a man on an airplane. About an hour into the flight, the pilot comes on and says over the intercom, "One of our four engines is out, we will be about 15 minutes late arriving."
About 30 minutes later, the pilot comes on the intercom again and says, "There is a second engine out, we will be about 30 minutes late."
Fifteen minutes after that the pilot comes on again, and says, "I'm sorry to say that we've lost our third engine, and it looks like we'll be about an hour late arriving at our destination."
The blonde turns to the man next to her and says, "Man, if that last engine goes out, we'll be up here all day."
The plane did not land safely … it was landed safely by the TWO pilots managing what is normally a once in a career (if that) emergency. Training, training, training.

Retired after 35 years of airline flying, I never lost an engine, and most mechanical failures were minor and rare. I thank the mechanics who worked on the aircraft in all kinds of weather for keeping me safe all these years, and the great recurrent training we receive in the sim.
Most of the problems today are adults acting like they're 10 years old. Flight Attendants definitely have their hands full these days. Just my opinion but alcohol should be banned on all flights, or at least be limited. Your cabin altitude is always around 8000' at altitude. It's like drinking high in the mountains for the entire flight.

Losing use of one engine is no big deal, routinely practiced. Losing the engine itself would be problematic.
Losing an engine on a twin is not necessarily catastrophic, depending on gross weight, flight profile, configuration , etc. But it is a big deal.
Engine separation would actually be beneficial as the decreased drag would greatly enhance controllability and cruise range. While fluid loss might be an issue it would not be dangerous as the engine is designed to separate in the event of servere malfunction preferable to losing the whole aircraft.
Such twin engine jet liners are designed to fly one just one engine. The failed engine likely had a blade failure which again is designed to contain most cases of blade shedding.

Actually the rule is plane has to continue flying with loss of 50% of thrust. So on 747 we could lose 2 engines & still be safe. Losing just one meant asking FA for another cup of coffee.

I remember when my father, a senior Army officer, was transferred to Germany with his family accompanying him. We departed from a Military Airlift command base in New York. We were assigned to an older 4 engine propeller aircraft, due to our smaller numbers. I remember we were seated just behind the wings so I had a great view of them (important to a 12 year old). We took off, and landed for refueling in Greenland. We left again and headed for England. Half way there one engine cut out totally, but we were reassured not to worry as the plane could fly with two engines, and we had 3 left. A couple of hours later an engine on the other side went out. We landed safely though and deplaned so repairs could be done. We were called to re-board and took off heading to Frankfurt. Right after takeoff, we noticed the previously dead engines were still dead. An Air Force General went forward to speak to the pilots and came back cursing. To repair the engines would cost several thousand dollars more in England than in Frankfurt, so the Military Airlift Command ordered them to fly to Frankfurt. Shortly after we had finished crossing the channel, a third engine died. Our flight crew did a great job finishing the flight on one engine, and we didn’t need any of the standby emergency crews. When we returned to the states, we traveled by ocean liner!
When Trump was President planes weren’t falling from the skies. Donald Trump understood the needs of true Americans whether it be food supplies, entertainment (The Apprentice), matters of national security, adherence to the Constitution and sound economic principles (balanced budgets). Everything he did he did for Americans because he’s a true patriot and selfless. We owe him a debt we’ll never adequately repay. We’ll never see another President so well read, compassionate, noble, dignified or as charitable.
