My family moved from South Korea to Canada when I just started elementary school... and I gotta say I can't thank my parents enough. My cousins were up until 2 to 3 am studying from middle school to high school, just to get a chance to enter a 'decent' university. The life in South Korea is extremely competitive and overall very painful (there's a reason why the suicide rate is one of the highest in South Korea).
It IS the highest.
I believe that this intense studying culture in Korea is necessary. We are an export based country and needs to be innovative and hence needs to study hard to stay competitive.
Although like you mentioned, the intense studying culture has some massive disadvantages like high suicide rates and low birth rates….
@Impootus what's the point of all the riches when life is so stressful and unhappy?
High Suicides are usually for poor nations, the exceptions are rich Korea and Japan.
@Wan R What's the point of a high standard of living, a longer lifespan compared to other countries, excellent healthcare. How can South Korea achieve those without any oil or any other natural resources? From its human capital, which is the only asset that the country has. Just think what South Korea would have been if they had oil and gas.
We have to remember that unlike Western Europe, US/Canada, Australia, New Zealand, or the Gulf Countries, South Korea doesn't have much resources or even wide fertile lands, no oil/natural gas too (there might be but it wasn't explored yet). SKorea has to rely on human capital, it's people has to be more valuable than any resource.
@Jill Thompson Finland, Sweden, and Denmark are prosperous despite lack of oil and gas. High standard of living, excellent healthcare and longer lifespan compared to other countries, and relatively strong economy. Like Korea they also only have human capital as the only asset.
Yet they consistently ranked among the highest in quality of life and happiness together with good work life balance and citizens' welfare, while Koreans often ends up at the opposite end of the spectrum. Why is that? I really can't really comprehend why some thinks that economic strength comes with stresses in life, especially when Scandinavian countries shows the exact opposite.
@Wan R The “point” is the entire country doesn’t have to live like Sudan or Somalia where you don’t have to worry about suicide since homicide is the far more likely scenario.
The highest is Greenland.
It's same here in India. We as a students need to deal with lot of pressure. Population is growing but the seats in colleges or universities or jobs in companies are not increasing.
As a Korean, there’s one more big problem to add. All the infrastructure and jobs are extremely centralized in Seoul. That makes people hard to relocate to other regions in Korea and people are forced to be more competitive to make their own livings. Seoul is nice and convenient city, cannot disagree with that but too stuffed here. Planning to leave here in a couple of years and live abroad.
A big reason for the birth rate issue in South Korea is tied up in this, as well. Raising children requires living space that most South Koreans can't have access to.
Since South Korea's economy is so deeply intertwined with Samsung, is it possible to say that South Korea's economy is reliant on the success of Samsung? I think this is because of the close relationship between Samsung executives and key South Korean government officials.

Samsung accounts for 20% of SK's GDP. I don't know if any other developed country is so dependent on one company.
I think it's safe to say that. Samsung has been creating almost 20% of the gdp in the country in recent years, therefore IF such a bubble would instantly burst, it would create a massive problem. I've read some stories about korean officials helping samsung in various scenarios - be it environmental damage, breaking law, or evading punishment. I believe that both sides are trying to upheld this status quo, since no good will come to either side if something happened.
And it's not just Samsung. It's also LG and Hyundai etc. 80% of the Korean economy derives from these chaebols.
Samsung is the Korean version of the Japanese Zaibatsus like Mitsubishi or Toyota.... and thats normal, mate. I live in Denmark, and we have a similar situation (yes, the economy of Denmark relies on family-owned corporations). The main difference is that Denmark is a very small country, so we are able to create a welfare state with the profit of these corporations, but in the case of South Korea, it's impossible due to the size of the population and geo-political reality, a.k.a. North Korea.
? @AaronVanWolfen Wrong, Toyota and Mitsubishi are far from Samsung. Samsung accounts for 20% of GDP, Toyota accounts for 5% of Japan's(which is still extremely high).
@Mamotale Mankoe The Samsung you're talking about is probs Samsung Electronics. That's just one branch out of the dozens of other companies under the name "Samsung". All of those little companies make up the "20% of GDP" you are talking about. How likely is it that all of those dozens of companies will fail overnight? Close to zero. Taiwan's situation is what you call really bad since TSMC accounts for more than 40% of its GDP and specializes in one single service: foundry. Taiwan is completely dependent on one company. So Taiwan is more dangerous.
Samsung is tooo important to korea. 20% korean gdp . Adding Hyundai, LG,Sk over 50%.
It is natural that the Korea government will support them. If samsung goes down, 20% gdp gone, 30 to 40 % korea work force had no jobs.
The better these companies perform the better for Korea overall .

I've lived in Korea and the US and I can say a lot of things are actually better in Korea. For example, I can walk late at night without worrying about anything. I leave my phone on the table and I don't have to worry about someone taking it. Gov't employees in Korea are friendly and actully really smart. Health care system I think is one of the best in the world. SKorea is a small nation compared to China, Russia and Japan, so people believe once they fall behind in terms of technology and science they might be swallowed up by surrounding nations.
I've been living in korea (my wife is korean) for three years now and I can safely say yes the health system is fairly good but people aren't friendly as you think and there are a lot of issues you probably choose to ignore.

US is really one of the worst countries in the western world when it comes to government services or safety.
South Korea prosperity reminds me with '80 Japanese bubble. Hope they learn from Japan bubble bust.
As a Korean, there’s so much more issues. Wealth disparity is a huge one. A big factor to our low birth rate.
